It’s a grand occasion for us today!
We’re hosting the finals of the Northern Club Challenge between Burdekin and Mackay for the women, and Brothers and Mundingburra Olympic for the men. The Northern Club Challenge is like a mini-FFA Cup where the senior teams from around North Queensland compete to be the ‘best of the best’ in the region.
It’s also Fury’s last home game for season 2015, although we’ve still got two more games to play after this weekend.
We can’t make the finals now but we’ve still got an aim for the season and that is to get as many points as possible. We’ve gathered 27 so far from 19 games and I would like to see us get 30 points.
On paper, that may sound simple but our opponents tonight and over the last two weeks of the competition are the top 3 teams in the competition, including tonight’s opponent Olympic FC.
But there’s nothing like a challenge. As I always say to the boys, it’s 11v11 out there. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Pele, Maradona or Lionel Messi, every player needs to weigh-up their game against the guy they’re playing.
Tonight I intend putting some young guys on the bench. At this end of the season, it’s a good opportunity for them to take the step-up in competition and to get a taste of what’s in store. While we already have a young side, there is a big difference in skill levels, physicality, temperament and sense of positional play between being an Under 18 player and being in the senior NPL squad. I want these young guys to show me what they can do, ahead of planning for the next season.
Come along to Sports Reserve tonight. The main game kicks-off at 7.30pm; the Northern Club Challenge at 3pm and 5pm.
