Northern Fury’s commitment to the development of young football players has received a welcome boost with the inclusion of India Kubin in a national Under 16/17 Women’s training camp starting tomorrow.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for India, and encouraging news for what we’re doing to support the development of young players,” said Director of Coaching, Ian Ferguson.
“Being selected for a national team training camp could be the beginning of a pathway for India through the national women’s teams. If India grabs this opportunity, and plays to her potential, it could take her to Asian and eventually world competitions.”
India, who is an Under 15 player with Fury, has been part of the development squads since their establishment three years ago under the guidance of Ferguson, together with Technical Director Bill Mitchell and goalkeeping coach Ken Mitchell.
Australia has three national women’s teams: the all-age Matildas who are taking part in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games next month; the Under 20 team known as the Young Matildas; and the Under 17 team.
The purpose of the national training camp is to identify the squad to play in a qualifying tournament in Vietnam in August for the Asian Football Confederation’s Under 17 women’s championship next year. Twenty-two other teams from the Asian region will take part in the qualifying tournament, with Australia to face Uzbekistan, Hong Kong, Palestine, Iraq and hosts Vietnam.
The 27 other players selected, along with India, for the national training camp have two chances to impress the national coach, Ante Juric. The second camp will be held later in the month ahead of final selections for the August tournament.
“It’s an exciting time and crucial time for India,” Ferguson said.
“Her three years with Northern Fury have helped her get this far and now it’s in her hands to take the next step.
“We're absolutely delighted that Ante Juric has invited her into the national team training camp. She takes with her the best wishes of everyone at Northern Fury for both training camps.”
